“Kevin Laffey signed us in June of ’87 after hearing demos for ‘Absolute Power.’ To get the ball rolling, we re-recorded a couple of songs from our first record – an EP for the independent label, Combat – and included a cover of the Ramones’ ‘Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment.’ Those songs were released as an EP, too – our first for a major label. Nevertheless, Dubay said that the label is enthusiastic and committed to breaking the band. (That particular number isn’t on Powermad’s debut LP, “Absolute Power,” no doubt disappointing gooned-out Elvis collectors everywhere.) At the end of the song, Cage’s character turns toward us and says, ‘You guys have got a lot of Elvis – The King – in ya.’ Then he jumps on stage, grabs the mike, and sings ‘Love Me Tender’ with us backing him.” “In one scene we’re on stage in a club playing ‘Slaughterhouse’ while (stars) Nicholas Cage and Laura Dern slam dance in front of us. “We got a small part as a house band,” he recalled. Joel Dubay, 25-year-old lead vocalist and guitarist for the band that opens for Fates Warning tomorrow night at the Airport Music Hall in Allentown, related the odd tale in a telephone interview on Tuesday. The four guys in Powermad, a Minneapolis-based thrash-metal act, found out about the King’s omnipresence after they landed a cameo role in director David Lynch’s upcoming movie, “Wild At Heart.” As Mojo Nixon likes to sing – and the supermarket tabloids would have you believe – Elvis is everywhere.
